The Venus Flytrap is the queen of carnivorous plants—and for good reason. With its jaw-like traps that snap shut in a fraction of a second, this little wonder is both a pest control champion and a living marvel of nature. Each trap is lined with tiny hairs that, when triggered by prey like fruit flies or gnats, slam shut to begin digestion. It’s weird, it’s wild, and it’s a must-have for any plant lover who wants a little drama on their windowsill.
Key Features
This compact plant grows in a low rosette, with traps typically reaching 1–1.5 inches in length. In its dormant season (winter), it will shrink back but bounce back with vigor in spring.
Pet-Friendliness

The Venus Flytrap is pet safe!
Care Instructions
Light: Needs at least 4–6 hours of direct sunlight or 12–14 hours under a grow light daily. Bright light = happy traps.
Watering: Only use distilled, rainwater, or reverse-osmosis water. Keep the soil damp at all times—never let it dry out.
Humidity: Average household humidity is fine, but they love a bit of extra moisture in the air.
Temperature: Prefers 20°C–30°C. Needs a dormancy period in winter (see below).
Soil: Use a 50/50 mix of sphagnum peat moss and perlite or a premade carnivorous plant mix. No fertilizer or standard soil—nutrients can damage roots.
Feeding: Outdoors, it will feed itself. Indoors, offer 1–2 bugs a month (like dead flies or small mealworms) only when the trap is open and healthy. Do not overfeed.
Dormancy: In winter (Nov–Feb), the plant will enter dormancy. Reduce watering slightly, keep cool (around 5°C–10°C), and let it rest until spring.
Repotting: Every 1–2 years in early spring before active growth resumes.
Pro Tip: Avoid triggering traps just for fun—it uses a lot of the plant’s energy! Save those snappy shows for real bugs.
