Toothpick Cactus (Stetsonia coryne)

Toothpick Cactus is a beautiful columnar cactus known for its distinctive silvery spines that resemble oversized toothpicks. Native to Argentina and Bolivia, this striking species combines dramatic architecture with an elegant blue-green stem colour.

Its bold appearance makes it an outstanding focal point for sunny windows or cactus collections.

Size and Growth:

Toothpick Cactus grows upright with a single column that may eventually branch as it matures. Indoors it is a slow grower but can become an impressive specimen over many years.

Pet Friendliness:

Not considered pet-friendly. While the plant itself is not known to be toxic, its long, sharp spines can easily injure curious pets and children.

Care Instructions:

Light: Provide bright light with several hours of direct sun each day. A south- or west-facing window is ideal.

Watering: Allow the soil to dry out completely between waterings. Water thoroughly during spring and summer, then reduce watering significantly during winter.

Humidity: Average household humidity is ideal. Avoid excessively humid conditions.

Temperature: Prefers warm temperatures between 18–30°C. Protect from frost and prolonged temperatures below 10°C.

Soil: Use a fast-draining cactus or succulent mix with added pumice or perlite.

Fertilizer: Feed once monthly during spring and summer with a diluted cactus fertilizer.

Repotting: Repot every 3–5 years or when the plant has outgrown its container. Always use a pot with drainage holes.
