The String of Hearts is a delicate trailing houseplant prized for its heart-shaped, silver-patterned leaves that cascade gracefully from long, slender vines. Native to South Africa, this semi-succulent beauty adds soft texture and romantic charm to any space. Its trailing habit makes it ideal for hanging baskets, shelves, or cascading from high planters. With the right care, this fast grower can trail several feet and even produce tiny magenta-toned tubular flowers.

Size: The String of Hearts is a fast-growing trailing plant, often reaching lengths of 2–4 feet (60–120 cm) or more indoors.

Growth: Its vines can be left to trail freely or trained around a hoop or trellis. Its small, plump leaves grow in pairs along each vine, creating a striking curtain of foliage over time.

Pet Friendliness:

While not considered highly toxic, String of Hearts may cause mild digestive discomfort if ingested. It’s best to keep this plant out of reach of pets and small children.

Care Instructions:

Light: Prefers bright, indirect light. Can tolerate some direct morning or evening sun. Insufficient light may cause leggy growth and pale leaves.

Watering: Allow soil to dry out completely between waterings. Water thoroughly, then let excess drain. Overwatering is the most common issue—less is more.

Humidity: Thrives in normal household humidity. Does not require high humidity, making it ideal for most indoor environments.

Temperature: Ideal temperatures range from 18°C–27°C. Protect from frost and avoid temperatures below 10°C.

Soil: Use a well-draining, sandy or cactus-style soil mix. Avoid heavy soils that retain moisture.

Fertilizer: Feed once a month in spring and summer with a balanced, diluted liquid fertilizer. Pause feeding in the fall and winter.

Pruning: Trim vines to maintain shape or encourage fuller growth. You can propagate cuttings directly into soil or water.

Repotting: Repot every 2–3 years or when root-bound. Use a shallow pot with excellent drainage.
