Pilea spruceana ‘Norfolk’, often called Norfolk Friendship Plant, is a compact tropical houseplant with beautifully textured leaves. Its foliage has a bronze-green base with silvery markings and deeply puckered veins, giving it a metallic, almost quilted look. New growth may have a soft pink or reddish tone before maturing darker, making this a lovely choice for terrariums, shelves, and small plant displays.

Key Features

Pilea ‘Norfolk’ stays fairly compact indoors, usually reaching approximately 6–12 inches tall and wide. It has a mounding, slightly spreading growth habit and can become fuller with regular trimming. It grows best in warm, humid conditions with steady moisture and bright, indirect light.

Pet-Friendliness

Non-toxic to pets – Generally considered safe for cats and dogs, making it a great choice for pet-friendly households

Care Instructions

Light: Prefers bright, indirect light. It can tolerate medium light, but the silver markings and textured growth may be less pronounced. Avoid harsh direct sun, which can scorch the delicate leaves.

WateringKeep the soil lightly moist, but not soggy. Water when the top layer of soil begins to dry. Avoid letting it dry out completely for long periods, as this can lead to crisping or wilting.

HumidityEnjoys moderate to high humidity. This plant does especially well near a humidifier, in a bright bathroom, or in a terrarium-style setup with airflow. Dry air may cause crispy leaf edges.

TemperatureKeep in a warm, stable spot between 18–26°C. Protect from cold drafts, chilly windows, vents, and sudden temperature changes.

SoilUse a light, well-draining potting mix that still holds a bit of moisture. A blend with potting soil, perlite, and a small amount of bark works well to keep the roots airy while preventing the soil from staying too wet.

FertilizerFeed monthly during spring and summer with a balanced houseplant fertilizer diluted to half strength. Reduce or pause fertilizing in fall and winter when growth slows.

PruningPinch or trim back longer stems to keep the plant compact and bushy. Remove any yellow, damaged, or crispy leaves as needed.

RepottingRepot every 1–2 years, or when the plant becomes rootbound. Choose a pot only slightly larger than the current one, as Pilea ‘Norfolk’ prefers a snug, well-draining setup.

Pro Tip: Pilea‘Norfolk’ likes a balance of moisture and airflow. High humidity helps the leaves stay lush, but soggy soil or stagnant air can cause leaf spotting or stem rot. Bright indirect light and steady moisture will bring out its best colour and texture.
