Size

Philodendron 'Nobel' is a striking tropical plant with glossy, finger-like leaves that radiate from the end of each stem, giving it a unique umbrella or pinwheel appearance. As it matures, each leaf develops more leaflets, creating an architectural look that stands out in any plant collection.

Interestingly, Philodendron 'Nobel' was formerly known as "Philodendron Goeldii", but has recently been reclassified as Thaumatophyllum spruceanum. It is not unusual to find this plant sold under one of these multiple names.

Size and Growth

Philodendron 'Nobel' is a moderate to fast grower when provided with bright light and warmth. Indoors, it can eventually reach around 1–1.5 m (3–5 ft) tall with a similar spread. Mature plants develop thicker stems and larger, more divided leaves over time.

Pet Friendliness

This plant is toxic to pets. It contains insoluble calcium oxalate crystals, which can cause oral irritation, drooling, and difficulty swallowing if ingested by cats or dogs. It's advisable to keep this plant out of reach of pets.

Care Instructions

Light: Bright, indirect light is ideal. It will tolerate medium light but grows more compactly and produces fuller foliage with brighter conditions. Avoid prolonged direct afternoon sun, which may scorch the leaves.

Water: Allow the top 2–5 cm (1–2 inches) of soil to dry before watering thoroughly. Never allow the plant to sit in standing water, as consistently wet soil can lead to root rot.

Humidity: Average household humidity is acceptable, but moderate to high humidity (50–70%) encourages larger leaves and healthier growth.

Temperature: Keep between 18–27°C. Protect from temperatures below 15°C and avoid cold drafts.

Soil: Use a chunky, well-draining aroid mix. A blend containing potting soil, orchid bark, perlite, and pumice provides excellent drainage while retaining enough moisture for healthy roots.

Fertilizer: Feed once a month during spring and summer with a balanced liquid houseplant fertilizer at half strength. Reduce or stop feeding during the winter months when growth naturally slows.

Pruning: Remove older yellowing leaves as needed. Pruning is rarely required but can help maintain shape or remove damaged growth.

Repotting: Repot every 2–3 years or when roots begin circling the pot. Choose a container only one size larger to avoid excess moisture around the roots.

Pro Tip: As Philodendron 'Nobel' matures, each new leaf develops more leaflets than the last. Consistent bright, indirect light and a chunky aroid mix will encourage the largest, most dramatic foliage and help the plant develop its signature umbrella-like form.
