The Philodendron nangaritense ‘Fuzzy Petiole’ is a rare and fascinating tropical aroid admired for its unique, textured stems and large, heart-shaped leaves. Its signature feature—the soft, reddish “fuzzy” petioles (leaf stems)—gives this plant both its name and charm. Native to the tropical rainforests of South America, this Philodendron combines bold foliage with a touch of whimsy, making it a must-have for collectors and plant enthusiasts. As it matures, the leaves become larger and more dramatic, bringing a lush, exotic vibe to any indoor space.

Size and Growth

Indoors, the Philodendron ‘Fuzzy Petiole’ can grow 2–4 feet (60–120 cm) tall, depending on care and available support. It has a semi-upright, clumping growth habit and benefits from a moss pole or stake to support its long petioles and encourage larger leaf development. Growth is moderate to fast in the right environment.

Pet Friendliness

This plant is toxic to pets. It contains insoluble calcium oxalate crystals, which can cause oral irritation, drooling, and difficulty swallowing if ingested by cats or dogs. It's advisable to keep this plant out of reach of pets.

Care Instructions

Light: Prefers bright, indirect light. Too little light will slow growth and reduce leaf size, while harsh direct sunlight can scorch the foliage.

Watering: Water when the top 1–2 inches of soil feel dry. Keep the soil evenly moist but not soggy, and always ensure the pot has good drainage. Reduce watering in winter.

Humidity: Thrives in high humidity (60–80%). Use a humidifier or pebble tray, or group with other tropical plants to maintain ideal conditions.

Temperature: Maintain a warm environment between 18°C–27°C. Avoid cold drafts and temperatures below 15°C.

Soil: Use a chunky, well-draining aroid mix containing orchid bark, perlite, and peat or coco coir. This allows air circulation and prevents root rot.

Fertilizer: Feed monthly during spring and summer with a balanced, diluted liquid fertilizer. Pause feeding during fall and winter when growth slows.

Pruning: Remove any yellowing or damaged leaves at the base to encourage healthy new growth.

Repotting: Repot every 1–2 years or when the plant becomes root-bound. Provide a sturdy support like a moss pole to promote upright growth and mature leaf development.
