The Philodendron ‘Emerald King’ is a regal houseplant known for its tall, upright growth and glossy green foliage. Unlike vining philodendrons, the Emerald King forms an impressive, self-heading structure, making it an excellent choice for adding a bold, architectural touch to your home. Its broad, spear-shaped leaves showcase a rich emerald hue that deepens as the plant matures, lending an elegant, tropical vibe to any space.

Size and Growth

Size: Indoors, the Philodendron ‘Emerald King’ can grow 3–5 feet (90–150 cm) tall and 2–3 feet (60–90 cm) wide.

Growth: Its upright, non-vining habit makes it perfect as a floor plant or statement piece in bright rooms. With proper care, it’s a moderately fast grower and can become a lush centerpiece.

Pet Friendliness

This plant is toxic to pets. It contains insoluble calcium oxalate crystals, which can cause oral irritation, drooling, and difficulty swallowing if ingested by cats or dogs. It's advisable to keep this plant out of reach of pets.

Care Instructions

Light: Prefers bright, indirect light but can tolerate medium light. Avoid direct sunlight, which may scorch the leaves.

Watering: Allow the top 1–2 inches of soil to dry out before watering again. Ensure proper drainage to prevent root rot. Reduce watering frequency in cooler months.

Humidity: Thrives in moderate to high humidity (50–70%). Consider using a humidifier or pebble tray in drier climates.

Temperature: Maintain between 18°C–27°C. Protect from cold drafts and avoid temperatures below 15°C.

Soil: Use a well-draining potting mix rich in organic matter, such as an aroid blend with perlite and orchid bark.

Fertilizer: Feed every 4–6 weeks during the growing season (spring and summer) with a balanced liquid fertilizer diluted to half strength. Stop fertilizing in fall and winter.

Pruning: Remove yellow or damaged leaves as needed. Light pruning helps maintain shape and encourages new growth.

Repotting: Repot every 1–2 years or when the plant becomes root-bound, choosing a container with good drainage.

Pro Tip: Wipe the large leaves regularly with a damp cloth to remove dust and help your Philodendron ‘Emerald King’ photosynthesize efficiently—keeping its foliage glossy and vibrant.
