Size

The Philodendron bipennifolium variegated is a rare tropical aroid admired for its uniquely shaped lobed leaves splashed with creamy white, yellow, and mint-green variegation. Each leaf has a playful, almost sculptural quality, with no two patterns alike—making this plant a standout specimen in any collection. Native to South America, this climbing philodendron brings a touch of elegance and tropical intrigue to any indoor jungle.

Size and Growth

Size: Indoors, the Philodendron bipennifolium variegated can grow 3–6 feet (90–180 cm) tall with support.

Growth: Its lobed leaves may reach 10–18 inches long, with striking variegation becoming more pronounced as the plant matures. A moss pole or trellis will encourage vertical growth and larger foliage.

Pet Friendliness

This plant is toxic to pets. It contains insoluble calcium oxalate crystals, which can cause oral irritation, drooling, and difficulty swallowing if ingested by cats or dogs. It's advisable to keep this plant out of reach of pets.

Care Instructions

Light: Thrives in bright, indirect light to maintain bold variegation. Can tolerate medium light, but leaf colour may fade. Avoid harsh direct sun, which can scorch the leaves.

Watering: Allow the top 1–2 inches of soil to dry out between waterings. Water thoroughly and ensure proper drainage to avoid root rot. Reduce watering during cooler months.

Humidity: Prefers moderate to high humidity (60–80%). Use a humidifier or pebble tray if your space is dry.

Temperature: Maintain between 18°C–27°C. Avoid cold drafts or temperatures below 15°C.

Soil: Use a chunky, well-draining aroid mix with orchid bark, perlite, and peat or coco coir.

Fertilizer: Feed monthly in spring and summer with a balanced liquid fertilizer diluted to half strength. Pause fertilizing in fall and winter.

Pruning: Remove yellow or damaged leaves to encourage new growth. Trim leggy stems to maintain shape.

Repotting: Repot every 1–2 years or when root-bound. Provide vertical support to help it climb and produce larger leaves.

Pro Tip: For maximum variegation and larger, dramatic foliage, give your Philodendron bipennifolium variegated consistent bright, indirect light and train it up a moss pole. Regular rotation ensures even growth and prevents one-sided leaning.
