The Sago Palm (Cycas revoluta) is an ancient, slow-growing plant admired for its striking symmetry and feathery, palm-like foliage. Despite its name, it’s not a true palm but a cycad—a prehistoric plant species with a bold, architectural form. Its thick trunk and glossy, dark green fronds add an exotic, sculptural touch to any indoor or outdoor space. Long-lived and visually stunning, the Sago Palm is perfect for those seeking a low-maintenance, statement plant.
Key Features:
Indoors, the Sago Palm grows slowly, typically reaching 1–2 feet (30–60 cm) in height and width in a pot. Over many years, it can grow taller, but it remains compact and easy to manage. Its stiff, arching fronds emerge from a central trunk and maintain a neat, symmetrical shape with minimal effort.
Toxicity:
Every part of the Sago Palm is highly toxic to pets and humans if ingested—especially the seeds and leaves. It can cause severe symptoms or be fatal if consumed. Keep out of reach of children and animals
Care Instructions:
Light: Prefers bright, indirect light to full sun. Indoors, place near a bright window. Outdoors, provide some protection from intense afternoon sun.
Watering: Allow the soil to dry out between waterings. Water thoroughly, but ensure the pot has good drainage. Overwatering is a common cause of root rot.
Humidity: Tolerates average household humidity. No special misting required.
Temperature: Ideal temperature range is 18°C-27°C. Protect from cold drafts and do not expose to temperatures below 10°C.
Soil: Use a sandy, well-draining mix, such as cactus or palm soil. Avoid dense, moisture-retentive soil.
Fertilizer: Feed every 1–2 months in spring and summer with a balanced, slow-release or diluted liquid fertilizer. Do not fertilize in fall or winter.
Pruning: Remove old or yellowing fronds at the base using clean shears. Do not cut the trunk or center of the plant.
Repotting: Repot every 3–4 years or when root-bound. Use a slightly larger pot with excellent drainage.
Pro Tip: Sago Palms love stability. Choose a spot with consistent light and avoid frequent moving or repotting. Be patient—this plant rewards slow growth with timeless beauty and durability
