Pachira aquatica (Money Tree)

Pachira aquatica, commonly known as the Money Tree, is a popular tropical houseplant recognized for its glossy, hand-shaped leaves and distinctive braided trunk. Its lush green canopy and tree-like appearance make it a beautiful choice for homes, offices, entryways, or anywhere you want an easygoing statement plant.

Young Money Tree stems are often carefully braided together by growers to create the characteristic trunk seen on many houseplants. Associated with good fortune and prosperity, the Money Tree is also a popular choice for housewarming and new-business gifts.

Size and Growth:

Braided Money Trees have an upright growth habit and can develop into substantial indoor plants over time. Indoors, they commonly reach 1.2–1.8 m (4–6 feet), although their size can easily be controlled with pruning.

New growth emerges from the top of the braided trunks, gradually creating a full, leafy canopy.

Pet Friendliness:

Generally considered pet-friendly. Pachira aquatica is considered non-toxic to cats and dogs. It is still best to discourage chewing to prevent stomach upset or damage to the plant.

Care Instructions:

Light: Bright, indirect light is best. Money Trees can tolerate medium light, but growth may become slower. Avoid prolonged harsh direct sunlight, which can scorch the leaves.

Watering: Allow the top 5–8 cm (about 2–3 inches) of soil to dry before watering thoroughly. Allow excess water to drain completely and never leave the pot sitting in water.

Humidity: Average household humidity is generally suitable, although moderate humidity will help keep the foliage looking lush and healthy.

Temperature: Keep warm and protected from cold drafts, heating vents, and sudden temperature changes. An indoor range of approximately 18–27°C is ideal.

Soil: Use a light, well-draining potting mix. A tropical houseplant mix with added perlite and fine orchid bark works well.

Fertilizer: Feed lightly during spring and summer with a balanced houseplant fertilizer. Reduce feeding during fall and winter when growth naturally slows.

Pruning: Trim long or uneven branches as needed to maintain the desired shape and encourage a fuller canopy. Remove yellow or damaged leaves as they appear.

Repotting: Repot every 2–3 years or when the plant becomes root-bound. Choose a container only slightly larger than the current pot and make sure it has good drainage.

Pro-Tip: Check beneath the soil and around the base of the braided trunk for ties, bands, or wires used to hold the braid together when the plant was young. If these begin cutting into the expanding trunks, carefully remove them. Money Trees also prefer to dry down between waterings, so don't be too quick with the watering can!
