The Organ Pipe Cactus is a magnificent columnar cactus named for the many upright stems that resemble the pipes of a church organ. Native to the Sonoran Desert, it develops a dramatic sculptural form that brings a true desert aesthetic to any collection.
Although capable of becoming enormous in nature, it remains slow-growing in containers, making it an excellent collector's specimen for bright indoor spaces.
Size and Growth:
Organ Pipe Cactus grows slowly indoors, producing upright columns from the base over time. Mature landscape specimens can reach several metres tall, but container-grown plants remain much more manageable.
Pet Friendliness:
Not considered pet-friendly. While the plant itself is not known to be toxic, its long, sharp spines can easily injure curious pets and children.
Care Instructions:
Light: Provide bright light with several hours of direct sun each day. A south- or west-facing window is ideal.
Watering: Allow the soil to dry out completely between waterings. Water thoroughly during spring and summer, then reduce watering significantly during winter.
Humidity: Average household humidity is ideal. Avoid excessively humid conditions.
Temperature: Prefers warm temperatures between 18–30°C. Protect from frost and prolonged temperatures below 10°C.
Soil: Use a fast-draining cactus or succulent mix with added pumice or perlite.
Fertilizer: Feed once monthly during spring and summer with a diluted cactus fertilizer.
Repotting: Repot every few years or when the plant has outgrown its container. Always use a pot with drainage holes.
