The Mistletoe Cactus is a funky, free-spirited plant with long, cascading stems that drape like green spaghetti over the sides of its pot. Unlike desert cacti, this tropical epiphyte hails from rainforests and loves humidity. Its quirky, trailing growth makes it perfect for hanging baskets, shelves, or high plant stands where it can show off its wild side. Small white flowers may appear in the right conditions, followed by cute, mistletoe-like berries—hence the name!
Key Features
With time, this plant can produce stems over 2 feet long, making it a wonderful statement plant. It grows relatively quickly and develops a lush, full look when happy.
Pet-Friendliness
Completely non-toxic to cats, dogs, and curious kids!
Care Instructions
Light: Prefers bright, indirect light. Can tolerate some direct morning sun but avoid harsh afternoon rays.
Watering: Water thoroughly when the top 1–2 inches of soil are dry. It enjoys moisture but is sensitive to overwatering. Let excess water drain freely.
Humidity: Thrives in moderate to high humidity. Mist regularly or place near a humidifier for optimal growth, especially in dry climates.
Temperature: Likes it warm! Ideal range is 18–27°C. Protect from cold drafts and avoid temperatures below 12°C.
Soil: Use a well-draining mix, such as cactus or succulent soil blended with orchid bark or perlite for extra aeration.
Fertilizer: Feed monthly during spring and summer with a diluted balanced houseplant fertilizer. Pause feeding in fall and winter.
Repotting: Repot every 1–2 years or when it becomes root-bound. This helps refresh the soil and encourages new growth.
Pro Tip: Rotate your mistletoe cactus every few weeks to keep the growth even and prevent one-sided legginess. Perfect for plant hangers and macramé baskets!
