Mammillaria is one of the largest and most diverse groups of cacti, loved for its compact size, attractive patterns of spines, and beautiful rings of colourful flowers. These charming cacti come in a wide variety of shapes, from perfectly round to short cylindrical forms, making them favourites among beginners and collectors alike.
Many Mammillaria species bloom readily when mature, producing delicate flowers in shades of pink, white, yellow, or red that form a beautiful halo around the top of the plant.
Size and Growth:
Most Mammillaria species remain compact, making them ideal for windowsills, desks, and succulent collections. Many varieties slowly produce offsets, eventually forming attractive clumps.
Pet Friendliness:
Not considered pet-friendly. While the plant itself is not known to be toxic, its long, sharp spines can easily injure curious pets and children.
Care Instructions:
Light: Provide bright light with several hours of direct sun each day. A south- or west-facing window is ideal.
Watering: Allow the soil to dry completely between waterings. Water sparingly during winter dormancy.
Humidity: Prefers dry air and average household humidity.
Temperature: Ideal temperatures are 18–32°C. Protect from freezing temperatures.
Soil: Use a fast-draining cactus mix with coarse mineral material such as pumice or gravel.
Fertilizer: Feed once monthly during spring and summer with a diluted cactus fertilizer.
Repotting: Repot every 3-5 years or when the plant has outgrown its container. Always use a pot with drainage holes.
Pro-Tip: The more sunlight Mammillaria receives, the better your chances of seeing its beautiful ring of flowers.
