Size

Ludisia discolor var. alba is a striking terrestrial jewel orchid grown primarily for its velvety green foliage and intricate silvery-white veining. Unlike many orchids that are prized mainly for their flowers, this variety makes a beautiful foliage plant year-round. Mature plants can also produce delicate spikes of small white flowers.

Key Features

Mature Size: Typically reaches about 6–12 inches tall, with flower spikes occasionally extending higher.

Growth Rate: Moderate under warm, humid conditions.

Growth Habit: Spreads gradually through creeping rhizomes, forming a fuller clump over time.

Pet-Friendliness

Non-toxic to pets. Safe for cats and dogs, making it a great choice for pet-friendly homes.

Care Instructions

Light: Prefers medium to bright indirect light. Avoid strong direct sunlight, which can scorch or fade the leaves.

Watering: Keep the soil lightly and consistently moist, allowing the top layer to dry slightly between waterings. Avoid letting the plant sit in soggy soil.

Humidity: Appreciates moderate to high humidity, ideally around 50–70%.

Temperature: Prefers temperatures between 18–27°C. Protect from cold drafts and temperatures below about 15°C.

Soil: Use a loose, moisture-retentive but well-draining mix. A blend of fine orchid bark, coco coir or peat, perlite, and sphagnum moss works well.

Fertilizer: Feed lightly with a diluted balanced fertilizer every 3–4 weeks during active growth. Reduce feeding during slower winter growth.

Pruning: Remove yellowing or damaged leaves and spent flower spikes as needed. Long stems can be trimmed to encourage fuller growth.

Repotting: Repot every 1–2 years or when the plant becomes crowded. A shallow pot is suitable because the rhizomes tend to spread horizontally.

Pro Tip: Jewel orchids prefer consistent moisture rather than the drying cycle used for many epiphytic orchids. Keeping the mix lightly moist while still allowing plenty of airflow around the roots helps maintain healthy, lush foliage.
