Hoya kerrii 'Yellow Inner Variegated' is a stunning variegated form of the beloved Sweetheart Hoya, prized for its thick, heart-shaped leaves in shades of light green or yellow bordered by a rich green. Each succulent-like leaf is unique, with beautifully irregular variegation that makes every plant one of a kind.

As the plant matures, it develops long vining stems that can be trained around a trellis or allowed to cascade gracefully from a hanging planter. Mature plants may even reward patient growers with clusters of fragrant, star-shaped flowers that produce tiny drops of sweet nectar. Slow-growing but incredibly rewarding, this is a true collector's plant that brings a touch of romance to any indoor jungle.

Key Features

Hoya kerrii is a slow-growing plant, especially when young. Single-leaf cuttings may stay as one heart-shaped leaf for a long time and may not vine unless they include a piece of stem with a growth node.

Mature plants can grow trailing or climbing vines and may benefit from a small trellis or support as they develop.

Pet-Friendliness

Non-toxic to pets. Safe for cats and dogs, making it a great choice for pet-friendly homes.

Care Instructions

Light: Bright, indirect light is ideal. Variegated forms benefit from several hours of bright filtered light each day to maintain their creamy margins. A little gentle morning sun is fine, but avoid harsh afternoon sun, which can scorch the white portions of the leaves

WaterAllow the soil to dry out most of the way between waterings. The thick leaves store moisture, so this plant does not like sitting in wet soil. Water less often in the cooler months when growth slows.

HumidityDoes well in average household humidity but appreciates moderate to higher humidity. Extra humidity can encourage healthier growth, especially when the plant is actively vining.

TemperaturePrefers warm, stable household temperatures. Protect from cold drafts, chilly windows, and sudden temperature changes.

SoilUse a chunky, well-draining potting mix. A blend with orchid bark, perlite, coco coir, and a little potting soil works well. Good airflow around the roots is important.

FertilizerFeed lightly during spring and summer with a diluted balanced fertilizer. Avoid over-fertilizing, as Hoyas are not heavy feeders.

PruningPrune lightly to shape the plant or control long vines. Avoid cutting off old flower spurs, as Hoyas can rebloom from the same spots.

RepottingRepot only when needed. Hoya kerrii prefers to be slightly snug in its pot and does not need frequent repotting. Always choose a pot with good drainage.

Pro Tip: Don't be discouraged by slow growth—this is completely normal! Give your Hoya bright light, let the soil dry between waterings, and be patient. A mature plant with a proper stem node can reward you with long vines and fragrant clusters of star-shaped blooms. If your plant is only a single rooted heart leaf without a node, it can stay healthy for years but will never produce vines.
