The Green Tomato Cactus (formerly Notocactus uebelmannianus) is a distinctive globe-shaped cactus admired for its smooth rounded body, neat rows of spines, and impressive flowers. Its deep green colour and symmetrical form make it an excellent addition to any cactus collection.
When mature, this species may produce large, colourful blooms that contrast beautifully against its bright green body.
Size and Growth:
Green Tomato Cactus remains relatively compact throughout its life and grows slowly, making it ideal for small pots and sunny windows.
Pet Friendliness:
Not considered pet-friendly. While the plant itself is not known to be toxic, its long, sharp spines can easily injure curious pets and children.
Care Instructions:
Light: Provide bright light with several hours of direct sun each day. A south- or west-facing window is ideal.
Watering: Allow the soil to dry completely between waterings. Water very little during winter.
Humidity: Prefers dry air and average household humidity.
Temperature: Ideal temperatures are 18–32°C. Protect from freezing temperatures.
Soil: Use a fast-draining cactus mix with coarse mineral material such as pumice or gravel.
Fertilizer: Feed once monthly during spring and summer with a diluted cactus fertilizer.
Repotting: Repot every 3-4 years or when necessary.
Pro-Tip: A cool, dry winter rest often encourages better flowering the following growing season.
