The Euphorbia trigona, commonly known as the African Milk Tree, is a striking succulent with tall, vertical stems lined with small green leaves and decorative ridges. Its vibrant green coloration is sometimes accented with hints of red or purple along the edges, especially in bright light. This architectural plant adds bold structure to your indoor collection while being incredibly easy to care for—perfect for succulent lovers and low-maintenance plant enthusiasts.

Key Features

Euphorbia trigona is a fast-growing, upright succulent that can reach 2–6 feet (60–180 cm) indoors over time. It forms multiple branching columns and can live for many years with minimal care.

Pet-Friendliness

Euphorbia trigona is toxic to pets and humans if ingested. It produces a white, milky sap that can cause skin irritation or stomach upset if consumed. Handle with care and keep away from pets and children.

Care Instructions

Light: Loves bright, indirect light and can tolerate some direct sun. A south or west-facing window is ideal.

Watering: Water thoroughly when the soil is completely dry. Euphorbia trigona is drought-tolerant and prefers to be underwatered rather than overwatered.

Humidity: Adapts well to normal household humidity. No special humidity care is needed.

Temperature: Thrives in warm conditions between 18°C–27°C. Protect from cold drafts and avoid temperatures below 10°C.

Soil: Use a cactus or succulent mix with excellent drainage. Ensure the pot has drainage holes to prevent root rot.

Fertilizer: Feed once a month during spring and summer with a diluted cactus or succulent fertilizer. No feeding is needed in winter.

Pruning: Prune carefully with gloves if needed to control size or shape. Be cautious of the milky sap, which can irritate skin.

Repotting: Repot every 2–3 years or when the plant becomes top-heavy. Use a heavy pot to support the plant’s upright growth.

Pro Tip: Rotate your Euphorbia trigona regularly to keep it growing straight and evenly toward the light. Use gloves when handling to avoid contact with the sap.
