Episcia cupreata is a charming tropical houseplant loved for its velvety, patterned foliage and sweet, colourful blooms. Its leaves often shimmer with shades of green, bronze, copper, silver, or burgundy depending on the variety, giving it a jewel-like look even when it is not flowering.
A close relative of African violets, Episcia cupreata has a soft trailing habit and can produce small, bright flowers in shades of red, orange, pink, or yellow. It is a beautiful choice for shelves, hanging baskets, terrariums, or warm, humid spaces where its foliage can spill gently over the edge.
Key Features:
Episcia cupreata is a compact to trailing grower. It stays relatively small but can spread outward through runners, creating a fuller plant over time.
Its trailing stems make it especially pretty in hanging pots or displayed where the vines can cascade.
Pet Friendliness:

The plant is pet-friendly! It is non-toxic to cats and dogs.
Care Instructions:
Light: Prefers bright, indirect light. Too much direct sun can scorch the delicate leaves, while too little light may reduce flowering and cause leggy growth.
Water: Keep the soil lightly and evenly moist, but never soggy. Water when the top layer of soil begins to dry. Avoid letting the plant fully dry out for long periods.
Humidity: Loves higher humidity and will grow best in a warm, humid environment. It can do well in terrariums, cabinets, bathrooms, or near a humidifier.
Temperature: Keep warm and protected from cold drafts. Episcia cupreata prefers stable household temperatures and should not be exposed to chilly windows or sudden temperature drops.
Soil: Use a light, airy, well-draining mix that holds some moisture. An African violet-style mix or a blend with peat/coco coir, perlite, and a little bark works well.
Fertilizer: Feed lightly during the growing season with a diluted balanced fertilizer or African violet fertilizer. Avoid over-fertilizing, as this plant prefers gentle feeding.
Pruning: Trim back leggy runners to keep the plant full and tidy. Removed runners can often be propagated to grow new plants.
Repotting: Repot when the plant becomes crowded or the soil has started to break down. Choose a shallow pot with good drainage, as Episcia cupreata has a smaller root system and does not like sitting wet.
Pro Tip: Prefers warmth, humidity, and gentle watering. Try to avoid splashing cold water on the velvety leaves, as this can cause spotting. For the fullest growth, give it bright indirect light and let the runners trail naturally.
