Desert Rose (Adenium)

Desert Rose is a stunning succulent shrub admired for its swollen trunk, sculptural form, and spectacular trumpet-shaped blooms. Native to the arid regions of Africa and the Arabian Peninsula, this unique plant combines the rugged beauty of a bonsai with vibrant flowers that appear in shades of pink, red, white, and everything in between.

Its thick, water-storing trunk (caudex) and glossy green leaves make Desert Rose an eye-catching feature even when it's not in bloom. With plenty of sunshine and the right care, it will reward you with flushes of colourful flowers throughout the growing season.

Size and Growth:

Desert Rose is a slow to moderate grower that develops a thick, sculptural trunk over time. Indoors, it typically reaches 30–90 cm (1–3 feet) tall, although mature plants can become much larger. With age, the swollen base becomes increasingly dramatic, making each plant more unique than the last.

Pet Friendliness:

Not considered pet-friendly. All parts of the Desert Rose contain a milky sap that is toxic if ingested and may cause skin irritation. Keep out of reach of pets and children.

Care Instructions:

Light: Provide as much bright light as possible. A sunny south or west-facing window with several hours of direct sunlight each day will encourage healthy growth and abundant flowering.

Watering: Allow the soil to dry out completely between waterings. Water thoroughly during the growing season, then reduce watering significantly during fall and winter when the plant naturally slows its growth.

Humidity: Prefers dry air and average household humidity.

Temperature: Keep warm year-round. Ideal temperatures are between 20–32°C. Protect from cold drafts and avoid temperatures below 10°C.

Soil: Use a fast-draining cactus or succulent mix. Adding extra pumice, coarse sand, or perlite will help prevent excess moisture around the roots.

Fertilizer: Feed every 2–4 weeks during spring and summer with a balanced fertilizer diluted to half strength. A fertilizer formulated for flowering plants may encourage more blooms.

Pruning: Prune after flowering to encourage branching and maintain a compact shape. Always use clean tools and avoid contact with the milky sap.

Repotting: Repot every 2–3 years during spring, or when the plant outgrows its container. Choose a pot with excellent drainage and avoid planting the caudex too deeply.
