Euphorbia milii, commonly known as Crown of Thorns, is a tough, sun-loving succulent shrub known for its thorny stems and clusters of colourful blooms. Its bright flower-like bracts can appear for much of the year when the plant receives plenty of light, making it an easy-care choice for a sunny windowsill.
Key Features
Crown of Thorns is a slow to moderate-growing plant that can reach approximately 60–90 cm (2–3 ft) indoors, though mature plants may grow larger over time. It develops woody, branching stems covered in prominent thorns.
Pet-Friendliness
Euphorbia is toxic to pets and humans if ingested. It produces a white, milky sap that can cause skin irritation or stomach upset if consumed. Handle with care and keep away from pets and children.
Care Instructions
Light: Loves bright, indirect light and can tolerate some direct sun. A south or west-facing window is ideal.
Watering: Allow the soil to dry thoroughly between waterings, then water deeply and allow excess water to drain. Reduce watering during the winter months. Avoid keeping the soil consistently moist.
Humidity: Adapts well to normal household humidity. No special humidity care is needed. Prefers drier conditions.
Temperature: Thrives in warm conditions between 18°C–27°C. Protect from cold drafts and avoid temperatures below 10°C.
Soil: Use a cactus or succulent mix with excellent drainage. Ensure the pot has drainage holes to prevent root rot.
Fertilizer: Feed once a month during spring and summer with a diluted cactus or succulent fertilizer. No feeding is needed in winter.
Pruning: Prune carefully with gloves if needed to control size or shape. Be cautious of the milky sap, which can irritate skin.
Repotting: Repot every 2–3 years or when the plant becomes top-heavy. Use a heavy pot to support the plant’s upright growth.
Pro Tip: Sunshine is the secret to flowers! If your Crown of Thorns is growing well but not blooming, try gradually increasing the amount of direct light it receives. Just remember—those thorns and that milky sap mean gloves are your friend.
