Coffee Arabica is a glossy, tropical houseplant with deep green leaves and a clean, elegant growth habit. While it is best known as the plant that produces coffee beans, indoors it is mainly grown for its beautiful foliage. With the right care, mature plants may eventually produce small white flowers followed by coffee cherries, though this is less common indoors.
Key Features
Coffee Arabica grows as a small shrub indoors and can reach approximately 2–6 feet tall with proper care. It has a moderate growth rate, especially during spring and summer. Regular pruning can help keep it compact and fuller-looking.
Pet Friendliness
Toxic to pets if ingested. It contains compounds that may cause irritation or gastrointestinal discomfort in cats and dogs. Keep out of reach of pets.
Care Instructions
Light: Prefers bright, indirect light. It can tolerate some gentle morning sun, but avoid harsh direct afternoon sun, which can scorch the leaves.
Watering: Keep the soil lightly moist, but not soggy. Water when the top inch of soil feels dry. Coffee plants do not like to fully dry out, but they are also sensitive to overwatering.
Humidity: Enjoys higher humidity. Dry air can cause crispy leaf edges, so a humidifier, pebble tray, or grouping it with other plants can help.
Temperature: Keep in a warm spot between 18–27°C. Protect from cold drafts, sudden temperature drops, and temperatures below 15°C.
Soil: Use a rich, well-draining tropical houseplant mix. A blend with potting soil, perlite, and bark works well to retain light moisture while still allowing excess water to drain.
Fertilizer: Feed monthly during spring and summer with a balanced houseplant fertilizer diluted to half strength. Reduce feeding in fall and winter when growth slows.
Pruning: Prune as needed to shape the plant and encourage bushier growth. Remove yellow, damaged, or older leaves to keep the plant tidy.
Repotting: Repot every 1–2 years, or when the plant becomes rootbound. Choose a pot only slightly larger than the current one to avoid holding too much extra moisture.
Pro Tip: Coffee Arabica likes consistency. Bright indirect light, even moisture, and higher humidity will keep the leaves glossy and healthy. Crispy brown edges usually mean the plant is too dry, the air is too dry, or it has been exposed to too much direct sun.
