The Cobra Fern (Asplenium nidus ‘Cobra’) is a striking variety of Bird’s Nest Fern known for its long, glossy green fronds with dramatically ruffled and wavy edges. Its upright, sculptural growth gives it a lush tropical look while remaining relatively compact. Unlike many ferns, its leaves emerge from a central rosette or “nest,” making it an eye-catching choice for shelves, tabletops, and humid rooms.
Size & Growth
Cobra Ferns typically reach around 30–60 cm (12–24”) tall and wide indoors, although mature plants can become larger in ideal conditions. Growth is moderate, with new fronds unfurling from the centre of the plant.
Pet Friendliness
Pet friendly. Asplenium nidus is considered non-toxic to cats and dogs.
Care
Light: Prefers bright, indirect light but will tolerate medium light. Avoid strong direct sunlight, which can scorch the tender fronds.
Water: Keep the soil consistently lightly moist, allowing the very top layer to dry slightly between waterings. Avoid letting the plant dry out completely. Water around the soil rather than directly into the centre of the rosette, as water sitting in the crown can encourage rot.
Humidity: Enjoys moderate to high humidity, ideally around 50–70% or higher. Higher humidity helps keep the fronds lush and prevents crispy edges.
Temperature: Prefers temperatures between 18–27°C. Protect from cold drafts, heating vents, and temperatures below approximately 15°C.
Soil: Use a light, moisture-retentive but well-draining mix. A quality indoor potting mix amended with materials such as coco coir, fine orchid bark, and perlite works well.
Fertilizer: Feed with a diluted balanced houseplant fertilizer approximately once a month during spring and summer. Reduce or stop feeding during the slower-growing winter months.
Pruning: Minimal pruning is required. Remove yellow, brown, or damaged fronds by cutting them near the base with clean scissors. Avoid cutting healthy new growth emerging from the centre.
Repotting: Repot approximately every 1–2 years, or when the plant becomes root-bound. Choose a pot only slightly larger than the existing container and always ensure it has good drainage.
Pro Tip: The centre of a Cobra Fern is its growing point. Avoid pouring water directly into the “nest.” Instead, water evenly around the soil at the base of the plant. Keeping the crown dry while providing good humidity is one of the easiest ways to keep this fern thriving.
