Calathea Insignis / Goeppertia Insignis (Rattlesnake)

Calathea Insignis, commonly known as the Rattlesnake Plant, is a striking tropical houseplant known for its long, narrow leaves patterned with deep green markings against a lighter green background. The undersides of the foliage add another layer of colour with their rich burgundy-purple tones. Like other members of the prayer plant family, its leaves naturally move throughout the day in response to changing light levels. Its bold foliage makes it an excellent choice for adding colour and texture without needing flowers.

Size and Growth:

Calathea Insignis typically reaches approximately 2–3 feet tall and wide indoors when mature. It has a moderate growth rate and develops into a dense, upright clump as new leaves emerge from the base. It does not climb and does not require a moss pole or other support.

Care Instructions:

Light: Prefers bright, indirect light. Avoid direct sunlight, which can scorch its delicate leaves. It can also tolerate lower light levels, making it perfect for shaded areas indoors.

Watering: Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Water when the top inch of soil feels dry, using distilled or filtered water to prevent leaf browning caused by fluoride or chlorine.

Humidity: Thrives in high humidity (50-60% or higher). Use a humidifier, mist the leaves regularly, or place the plant near a tray of water and pebbles to maintain moisture levels.

Temperature: Maintain a warm environment between 18-27°C. Protect it from cold drafts and sudden temperature changes. Keep it away from heat vents in the cooler months.

Soil: Use a well-draining potting mix rich in organic matter. A mix designed for tropical plants or a blend of peat, perlite, and compost works well.

Fertilizer: Feed monthly during the growing season (spring and summer) with a balanced, water-soluble fertilizer at half strength. Avoid fertilizing in fall and winter.

Repotting: Repot every 2-3 years in spring to refresh the soil and allow for healthy root growth.
