Key Features

Size: Indoors, this plant typically reaches a height of 12-24 inches (30-60cm), and can spread up to 18 inches (45 cm) wide.

Growth: Slow.

Pet-Friendliness

While technically non-toxic to cats and dogs, the spines of this plant can cause physical irritation. It is not recommended to keep this plant near pets.

Care Instructions

Light: Thrives in bright, direct sunlight. Place near a south or west-facing window to ensure optimal growth.

Watering: Allow the soil to dry out completely between waterings. Overwatering can lead to root rot. During the growing season (spring and summer), water sparingly. In winter, reduce watering frequency significantly.

Humidity: Prefers low humidity environments. Ensure good air circulation to mimic its natural arid habitat.

Temperature: Ideal temperatures range between 18°C–29°C. Protect from frost and avoid exposure to temperatures below 10°C.

Soil: Use a well-draining cactus or succulent potting mix. Incorporating sand or perlite can enhance drainage.

Fertilizer: Feed with a balanced, water-soluble fertilizer diluted to half strength once a month during the growing season. Do not fertilize in fall and winter.

Pruning: Remove any dead or damaged pads using sterilized tools. Always wear protective gloves to avoid contact with spines.

Repotting: Repot every 2–3 years or when the plant outgrows its container. Choose a pot that is one size larger and ensure it has drainage holes.

Pro Tip: To propagate, allow a healthy pad to callous over for a few days before planting it in well-draining soil. Keep the soil lightly moist until roots develop.
