Ferocactus hamatacanthus is a striking barrel-shaped cactus known for its bold hooked spines and attractive ribbed body. As it matures, it develops a strong architectural form that makes it an eye-catching focal point in any cactus collection.
During the growing season, mature specimens may produce beautiful yellow flowers with reddish centres, adding even more interest to this impressive desert plant.
Size and Growth:
This species grows slowly into a rounded to barrel-shaped cactus. Mature plants can become quite substantial over many years while remaining manageable in containers.
Pet Friendliness:
Not considered pet-friendly. While the plant itself is not known to be toxic, its long, sharp spines can easily injure curious pets and children.
Care Instructions:
Light: Provide bright light with several hours of direct sun each day. A south- or west-facing window is ideal.
Watering: Allow the soil to dry completely between waterings. Water very little during winter.
Humidity: Prefers dry air and average household humidity.
Temperature: Ideal temperatures are 18–32°C. Protect from freezing temperatures.
Soil: Use a fast-draining cactus mix with coarse mineral material such as pumice or gravel.
Fertilizer: Feed once monthly during spring and summer with a diluted cactus fertilizer.
Repotting: Repot every 3-4 years or when necessary.
Pro-Tip: Always use thick gloves or folded newspaper when handling Barrel Cactus—the hooked spines can easily catch skin and clothing.
