Size

The Alocasia African Mask – Dwarf Amazonica (Alocasia amazonica 'Polly') is a compact version of the classic Alocasia, perfect for tabletops or shelves. Its dramatic arrow-shaped leaves feature glossy deep green colouring with bold white veining and scalloped edges. Despite its name, it’s not from Africa—this striking cultivar was bred for its exotic look and manageable size, making it an ideal statement plant for smaller spaces.

Key Features:

This dwarf variety typically grows to about 12–18 inches (30–45 cm) tall and wide. While smaller than standard Alocasia amazonica, it brings just as much impact. Growth may slow in winter but picks up in spring with warmth and humidity.

Pet-Friendliness

Toxic to pets – Contains calcium oxalate crystals which can be harmful if ingested by cats or dogs. Keep out of reach of pets and children.

Care Instructions

Light: Prefers bright, indirect light. Avoid direct sun which can scorch leaves. Too little light may result in leaf drop.

Watering: Keep soil lightly moist during the growing season. Water when the top 1 inch of soil is dry. Avoid overwatering—Alocasias dislike soggy roots.

Humidity: Thrives in high humidity (60%+). Mist occasionally, group with other plants, or use a humidifier for best results.

Temperature: Best kept between 18°C–27°C. Avoid cold drafts and temperatures below 15°C.

Soil: Use a well-draining mix like an aroid blend—potting soil mixed with perlite, orchid bark, and peat works well.

Fertilizer: Feed every 4 weeks during spring and summer with a balanced, diluted liquid fertilizer. Pause feeding during dormancy.

Pruning: Remove yellowing or damaged leaves at the base to keep the plant tidy and healthy.

Repotting: Repot every 1–2 years in spring or when root-bound. You can divide corms at this time to propagate new plants.

Pro Tip: Alocasias can occasionally go dormant if stressed or exposed to cold—don’t toss it! Reduce watering and wait for it to bounce back when conditions improve.
