Albuca spiralis, often called Frizzle Sizzle, is a quirky bulb plant loved for its curly, spiral-shaped leaves that look like little green ribbons having a party. Its unusual foliage gives it a playful, sculptural look, making it a fun choice for sunny windowsills and collectors who love plants with personality.

During its active growing season, Albuca spiralis can also produce tall flower spikes with small yellow-green blooms that have a light, sweet fragrance. This plant has a seasonal growth rhythm, so it may rest or go dormant at certain times of the year.

Size and Growth:

Albuca spiralis is a compact bulb plant that usually stays small, making it perfect for windowsills, shelves, or small pots.

It grows from a bulb and produces curly leaves during its active season. The curl is usually strongest when the plant receives plenty of bright light. After flowering or during dormancy, the leaves may yellow and die back, which is a normal part of its cycle.

Pet Friendliness:

Toxic to pets if ingested, as it contains calcium oxalate crystals that can cause irritation and discomfort in cats and dogs. Keep it out of reach of pets and small children.

Care Instructions:

Light:
Prefers very bright light and can handle some direct sun. A bright windowsill is ideal. Too little light may cause the leaves to stretch and lose their tight curls.

Water:
Water when the soil has dried out. During active growth, water thoroughly, then allow the soil to dry before watering again. Reduce watering when the leaves begin to yellow or the plant enters dormancy.

Humidity:
Does well in average household humidity and does not need extra humidity. Avoid overly damp conditions.

Temperature:
Prefers normal indoor temperatures and good airflow. Protect from freezing temperatures and cold drafts.

Soil:
Use a very well-draining soil mix. A cactus/succulent mix with added perlite or pumice works well. The bulb does not like sitting in wet soil.

Fertilizer:
Feed lightly during the active growing season with a diluted balanced fertilizer. Do not fertilize while the plant is dormant.

Pruning:
Remove yellow or dried leaves once they naturally die back. Avoid cutting healthy green leaves, as they help the bulb store energy.

Repotting:
Repot only when needed, usually when the bulb has outgrown its pot or the soil has broken down. Choose a pot with drainage and avoid burying the bulb too deeply.

Pro Tip: Albuca spiralis has a rest period, so do not panic if it starts to look tired or loses leaves after flowering. When it goes dormant, back off on watering and let the bulb rest. Bright light is the secret to keeping those curls tight and adorable.
